Hi Community, I just finished reviewing the official announcement and wanted to share my highlights TLDR IT equipment within data centers, including routers, servers and storage arrays, emit high levels of heat that requires data centers to be fitted with robust cooling systems to remove that heat "Most datacenters operate within restrictive temperature and humidity bands, resulting in environments that are unnecessarily cooler than required," said Rob Brothers, Program Vice President, Datacenter Services, IDC "Optimizing data center temperatures results in more efficient operations, benefitting businesses and the planet..." - Sue Preston, vice president and general manager, Advisory and Professional Services, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). As a part of this new efficiency initiative, Equinix expects to operate its facilities closer to 27°C (80°F), aligning operating limits across its global data center portfolio with the globally accepted boundaries of the A1A standards from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). this new initiative will contribute to the overall sustainability of its data centers through efficiency improvements "Our cooling systems account for approximately 25% of our total energy usage globally..." "we anticipate energy efficiency improvements of as much as 10% in various locations." - Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President, Global Operations for Equinix. Equinix was the first in the data center industry to commit to becoming climate neutral, aligned to approved science-based targets, for emissions reduction across its global operations and supply chain by 2030. Equinix's renewable energy coverage has been over 90% since 2018. In 2021, the company achieved 95% renewable energy coverage. Hi All - New to the community and looking forward to connecting and learning! If you or any new hires on your team (or your mom!) are new to interconnection, ecosystems and data centers, this short “Where is the Physical Internet?” video from investment company Cowen is an excellent intro from the consumer perspective. It's a 9-minute walk-through of Equinix’s NY5 facility that includes insight into the physical infrastructure responsible for securing, cooling/powering, and connecting a modern data center. During the tour, you’ll also learn about the ecosystems at the NY5 data center that attract companies to interconnect there. The video is meant for anyone interested in learning more about where and how data is stored and exchanged. Hope you like it as much as I do!5.9KViews4likes0CommentsBlog | What Is a Data Center? What Are Different Types of Data Centers?
A few points that stood out to me in the What Is a Data Center? What Are Different Types of Data Centers? blog Are data centers expanding, modernizing or shrinking? According to a recent Network World article, “Companies might not be physically building brand new, centralized data centers, but they are modernizing their existing data center facilities and expanding their data center footprint to edge locations.” According to a 2022 study, more than half (51%) of IT professionals said they were planning to close all of their on-premises data centers in the next 24 months. The sixth annual Global Interconnection Index (GXI) 2023, a market study published by Equinix, predicts that: “By 2026, 80% of G2000 companies will be digital leaders, interconnecting with 4+ hyperscale providers and 30+ SaaS/business partners, on average.” Most enterprise and government data centers cannot meet the high standards of today’s or future sustainability objectives (i.e., carbon neutrality), especially on a global scale. In 2021 we achieved 95% renewable coverage for our global data center energy consumption, with over 200 sites covered with 100% renewable energy. Companies around the world can drive their business advantage by leveraging Equinix data center sustainability. There are many different types of data centers On-premises data centers Colocation data centers Hyperscale/IaaS data centers Bitcoin and cryptocurrency data centers Core data centers Edge data centers Are you working to move away from your on-premises data centers? Are you taking advantage of Core and Edge data centers? Let me know your thoughts.5.5KViews1like0CommentsNever Miss an Important Notification in Customer Portal!
